TOP 3 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR RESTAURANT LIGHTING

TOP 3 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR RESTAURANT LIGHTING

Good lighting can make or break a restaurant. Your food might be fantastic, but if it’s offset by harsh fluorescent lights or an overly dark atmosphere, no one will enjoy the ambiance. To keep customers coming back and appreciating your fine cuisine and your surroundings, consider these tips from our pro crew here at RU Electrical Service, Inc.

Get a professional assessment. Your first step in getting the ideal lighting for your restaurant is to have a lighting pro assess your needs. One of our technicians can come to your restaurant, evaluate your needs, and help you develop a plan for maximizing your restaurant lighting and for maintaining it. We can also help you work within your budget.

Consider the mood when you have customers come to your restaurant, what kind of experience do you want them to have? Are you looking to create a romantic, intimate setting, or are you more interested in a fun, upbeat atmosphere geared toward families? Lighting can affect the mood, so start by determining just what type of experience you want your customers to have. Look at your lights, both inside and out. Many restaurant owners do an excellent job picking out beautiful lighting inside to make each customer’s dining experience enjoyable. However, don’t forget to consider the exterior lights and parking lot lights!

If your building isn’t well lit or the parking lot doesn’t look safe, then that may detract customers from coming inside and enjoying your atmosphere and fine food. Don’t let exterior lighting take away from a fantastic dining experience. To find out more or to get a restaurant lighting assessment, contact RU Electrical Service today at (317) 348-5047. Our pro electricians have both the knowledge and experience to maximize your restaurant’s lighting.

We serve clients in and around IndianapolisFishers CarmelMcCordsvilleZionsville, and Greenfield.

HOME ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING: WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL AN ELECTRICIAN?

HOME ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING: WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL AN ELECTRICIAN?

electric wiring

BEFORE TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR HOME WIRING, READ THESE GUIDELINES

Are you getting ready to fix your home electrical issues?  Before you go troubleshooting them yourself, remember that some electrical issues will need an expert electrician’s attention.  Even though some of these common electrical issues are due to the bad habits of the initial installer, other issues can be much deeper and require that a professional to repair and do the troubleshooting.  Which home electrical projects can you consider as DIY-friendly and which will need the help of a master electrician?  RU Electrical Service of Indianapolis, IN has the answers you are looking for.

THESE HOME ELECTRICAL REPAIRS DON’T USUALLY REQUIRE AN ELECTRICIAN AND ARE USUALLY DIY-SAFE

  • Simple Circuit Overloads

Simple means exactly that in this case.  If you have too many appliances plugged in the circuit breaker will usually trip.  If it is not broken, expect an overload to be easy to find.  This issue is pretty easy for the homeowner to fix, just unplug the appliances.  Move the appliances to a different outlet on a different circuit.  You should be able to spread out the power and fix the problem.

  • Bad Dimmer Switches

Sometimes it is as simple as the switch going bad.  Just replace it.  Turn off the power and replace the switch.  Follow the instructions carefully.  If you make a spark because you did not turn off the power you will short the dimmer.  Then you will be going back to the store to buy a new switch.  Additionally, the wires can come loose and make a poor connection.  Tightening the wires up can solve the dimmer problem.

  • Flickering Or Flashing Recessed Lights ( Can Lights)

Often times recessed lighting will turn off and on.  You probably think it doesn’t make sense.  Can lights use a special bulb that dissipates heat better than others.  Make sure you only buy the recessed lighting bulbs or you will have an overheating fixture that does not stay on.

  • Lights Keep Blowing out

Why do my lights keep burning out?  Chances are you have used a bulb that is too high of a wattage.   Use a lamp that is rated lower in power usage or just switch out to LED for long life and lower power consumption.

FOLLOW THESE RULES VERY CAREFULLY WHEN WORKING ON YOUR OWN HOME WIRING

If you have any doubt in your mind about whether you are being safe or not please do not hesitate to call a professional and licensed electrician.  Saving a few dollars won’t matter if you get hurt or catch something on fire.  Electricity is no joke and should always be handled with extreme caution.  Follow these safety guidelines for a pleasant and safe experience:

  1. Turn the power off at the breaker switch for the designated circuit before you begin

Use one hand to flip the breaker switch to the off position.  Do not touch the panel with more than one hand.  This is to avoid possibly touching another part of the panel that would have power.  You can electrocute yourself if you are not careful.  DON’T TAKE THE CHANCE ALWAYS PLAY IT SAFE!

  2. Mark the breaker that must stay off so no one accidentally turns it back on
This will prevent the breaker from being accidentally turned ON while you are working.
  3. Always test to make sure the power is off by using a non-contact electrical tester
You can never be too careful when working with power.  Simple pen-style electrical testers cost less than $20 and can be ordered online or picked up at the hardware store.  Always double check that the power is off.
  4. Put the wire nuts back on the wires
Take every precaution that you can to not get shocked.  The power should be off but you should still replace the wire caps just to be safe.
  5. Try not to work in a wet environment to reduce electrical shock
Standing in a puddle and working on electricity is never a good idea. Make sure you are not wet or in a wet workplace.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TROUBLESHOOT YOUR ELECTRICAL: CALL AN ELECTRICIAN FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING

A licensed local electrician should be called if you have any of these issues:

  • Flickering Or Dimming Lights

If you have lights that are dim or flickering you could have a bad connection.  This is called a short or a fault.  These require the skill of an electrical pro to troubleshoot.  You want to resolve these quickly and completely to avoid damage and or electrical fire.

  • Broken/Malfunctioning Outlets

Your plugs fall out of the outlets and seem too loose to use.  You might have an old wiring system that needs updating.  Chances are you do not have enough electrical outlets in your home.  Time to upgrade.  Take out your old 2-prong outlets without a ground and install new 3-pronged grounded outlets.  You may even need to add GFI protected outlets.

  • Recurring Or Continuous Breaker Trips

Do your breakers keep tripping after you reset them?  There is definitely a problem in the wiring and you should address this immediately.  Broken wires or wires that are carrying too large of a current are dangerous.  Exposed wires could be the problem too.  Heat and ground faults are usually to blame.

  • Your Breakers Are Buzzing Or Humming

Turn the breaker off right now.  Do not delay in calling your trusted local electrician.  This type of malfunction is not friendly and cannot be ignored.

  • Outdated/Antiquated Wiring In Older Homes

Historical homes have what is called knob and tube wiring.  This is an outdated form of electrical wiring made of aluminum.  Knob and tube is extremely dangerous.  You will most likely need your entire home rewired.  The electrical code states that this should be updated before being used.

  • Not Enough Power For Your Appliance

The main breaker in your electrical panel, the biggest topmost switch, will have a number on it.  60-amp services were common decades ago.  Today’s homes require a more modern electrical system.  Appliances will usually need to have more power than this system can supply.  It is recommended to upgrade your electrical service in order to accommodate the power usage of the typical family.

  • Electrical Issues Related To Or Near Water

Don’t even think about addressing an electrical issue near water or if it involves some type of plumbing.  This is definitely reserved for a licensed professional.

Still not sure if your electrical issues are something you should handle?  Stop worrying yourself and your loved ones.  Keep your house and your family out of harm’s way with the awesome electrical staff at RU Electrical Services today.

2. ADD SAFETY AND SECURITY.

Plus, if you have security cameras, added lighting is only a bonus as you try to keep tabs on your property.

3. DEMONSTRATE PROFESSIONALISM.

Customers, whether they know it or not, begin to assess your level of professionalism from the moment they turn into your parking lot. The lack of parking lot lights or lights that aren’t well-maintained will say something about your level of professionalism and attention to detail. By making sure your parking lot is well lit at all times, you’re showing customers from the first moment they come on to your property that you are all about quality—whether that’s quality retail products, quality food, or quality service.

COULD A SOLAR PARKING LOT BE IN YOUR FUTURE?

COULD A SOLAR PARKING LOT BE IN YOUR FUTURE?

A world without pavement, sidewalks, or asphalt roads may sound like a boring nightmare but what if those surfaces were instead blanketed in durable, cutting edge solar panels? According to engineering couple Julie and Scott Brusaw, solar roadways, driveways, and even courts used for tennis or basketball could be the next step in finding renewable energy alternatives. Just imagine how cool your company’s parking lot could look covered in interlocking solar panels that, instead of just sitting there getting hot like asphalt or concrete, absorb solar energy for you throughout the daytime.

At RU Electrical Services, your go-to Indianapolis electrician, we can easily see the financial, environmental, and aesthetic benefits this new solar technology could bring. With heated, LED-covered solar panels covering the parking lot of your business, you’ll be the talk of the town. The heated panels will even melt away snow in winter and the LED lights will ensure everyone will be able to make their way to your door. The best part is that the solar panels will harness free energy from the sun so that you can ensure your company has proper parking lot lighting for less.

From a May 26th, 2014 article via TechCrunch:

“Here’s an idea crazy enough that it just might work: Pave the streets with solar-powered panels that have their own built-in heat and LED lights. That’s what Scott and Julie Brusaw hope to accomplish with their ongoing Solar Roadways project, which they just funded through a hugely popular crowdfunding campaign.

The husband-and-wife team has spent the better part of the last decade developing solar-powered modular panels that could be installed in roadways and parking lots, and would be able to collect power from the sun. Those panels could also keep streets clear of snow and ice, while illuminating them with LEDs.

Rather than paving streets and driveways with asphalt, the Solar Roadways panels would theoretically be able to decrease our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels by generating massive amounts of clean energy. Panels are made from ruggedized glass and connect to one another through a mesh network, so that even if one panel fails the system will notify repair crews that it needs to be replaced.”

BATHROOM LIGHTING TIPS FROM YOUR INDIANAPOLIS ELECTRICIAN

BATHROOM LIGHTING TIPS FROM YOUR INDIANAPOLIS ELECTRICIAN

Lighting is an extremely important aspect of a well-designed bathroom. Proper lighting can make your home feel more welcoming and can even make a cramped bathroom seem more spacious. Here at RU Electrical Services, your go-to Indianapolis electrician, we’ve thought up some tips to help you utilize the lighting in your bathroom more effectively.

The lighting in your Indianapolis bathroom serves many practical purposes. A well-lit bathroom can help you transition from being asleep to rising for work in the morning. Proper lighting around the mirrors is also necessary for precision beard or eyebrow grooming. If you want some extra insight on setting your bathroom in the right light, check out the Indianapolis electrician lighting tips below from RU Electrical Services.

Color: Color plays a big role with your bathroom’s lighting. Darker paint colors on the walls will absorb light and make smaller bathrooms feel claustrophobic. Light color tones reflect light and can create a more open atmosphere in your bathroom.

Natural Light: Natural light promotes relaxation. By utilizing mirrors in your bathroom, you can reflect and distribute sunshine through your bathroom without expensive window installation. The thing about sunlight, though, is that it doesn’t work at night for some reason. That’s why it’s important to not just think about how the lighting in your bathroom looks during the day, but how it will appear when the sun goes down as well.

Trust the Professionals: If you want to update the lighting or electrical wiring in your bathroom, but don’t know exactly what you’re working with, call on a trusted professional Indianapolis electrician like RU Electrical Services to inspect your home wiring.

You may even save considerable money on medical bills when you call on a seasoned expert to handle projects you can’t tackle on your own – especially with something as serious as your home’s electrical wiring.

Need electrical repairs or wiring help? Contact us today at (317) 348-5047. We’ll be more than happy to put our capable hands to work in your Indianapolis, Fishers, or McCordsville home.

DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS

DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS

Christmastime is fast approaching, and lights are starting to go up all over Indianapolis—Monument Circle, the Zoo, and the Children’s Museum all have impressive holiday light displays. Homeowners are starting to decorate, too. In this blog, we’ve highlighted a few tips you should follow to make your Christmas light installation as painless as possible.

  • Make sure you have enough lights. It’s frustrating to discover that a string of Christmas lights will only cover half of your roofline, especially if you’re already in the process of hanging them. Before you start, try measuring the area you want your lights to cover; then, buy enough strings to cover the whole length. You’ll probably also need a heavy-duty extension cord to connect your lights to your home wiring; this is a good time to measure that distance, as well.
  • Check your lights before you start hanging them. Strings of holiday lights have a terrible inclination toward bulb and fuse failure. Don’t spend hours hanging lights from your roof, only to discover that your careful handiwork was all for nothing. Christmas light bulb testers are available at many home improvement stores, or you can just plug your lights into an outlet.
  • Be safe! Use proper ladder safety techniques. Make sure the ground underneath the ladder is flat and level, and try to lean it against the eaves themselves. If you have no choice but to lean your ladder against a gutter, put a piece of 2 by 4 inside the gutter to stabilize it. Snow can cause an extension ladder’s feet to slip—if you must use a ladder directly after a snowfall, clear away the snow and place the ladder’s feet directly on the ground itself. Make sure you also dress appropriately—if it’s below freezing, you’ll want to make sure you have gloves, a hat, and appropriate outerwear.
  • Consider a professional Christmas light installation. Christmas should be a time for relaxing with family and friends, not fighting with your electrical wiring. Electrical contractors have the right tools, knowledge, and experience to install holiday lights in half the time, and you’ll be able to enjoy a beautifully decorated house without any frustration.

When you’re looking for an electrician to install your Christmas lights, try calling RU Electrical Services. We are an electrical company that serves Indianapolisand the surrounding areas, and we have twenty-five years of experience installing Christmas lights, home wiring, and commercial electrical systemsContact us today at (317) 348-5047, and you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully decorated home.
