TIPS & TRICKS FOR SAVING ON YOUR ELECTRIC BILL

We love electricity more than the average person. Let’s face it: It’s like air over here at RU Electrical Service of Indianapolis. But despite how much we live and breathe all things electrical, we also know that running electricity constantly comes at quite a cost. So to help you save on your electric bill, we’d like to pass along a few tricks of the trade.

1. GET A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT.

If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, get one. They’re relatively inexpensive and can help you monitor your home’s temperature throughout the day, adjusting for when you aren’t home or for while you’re asleep. You can set a program and then forget it while it saves you money from running your HVAC constantly.

2. CHECK FOR LEAKS.

Heating and cooling your home can cost quite a bit, especially during those harsh Indiana winters or the peak of summer heat. Don’t let that precious air escape through doors or window leaks. Check your home for where air might be escaping, and then make sure you seal it properly (or hire it done).

3. UPGRADE TO ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHT BULBS.

Yes, energy-efficient light bulbs generally cost more money up front. However, their longer lifespan and ability to save you money is worth the investment.

4. TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS.

If you leave the house, don’t leave all the lights on. You may want one or two on for security when you return, but leaving your entire house lit up may cost you a small fortune. You can also put your lights on a timer so they will self-adjust based on the time of day. Some people even have their home wired with the technology to adjust lighting remotely from a cell phone or laptop.

5. SET YOUR WATER HEATER TO 120 DEGREES.

Pediatricians may have told you to lower your water heater to 120 degrees to avoid scalding, but did they also tell you it can lower your electric bill? You bet it does. In fact, Bankrate reports that electric water heaters that are set at or higher than 140 degrees can expect to lose up to $61 each year as the water heater tries to keep water at that temperature, even when you’re not using it.
